About Clay
Like a raccoon in a compost heap, Clay is most content while munching on a good story. They have a particular fondness for buried treasure, grumpy souls, and anything unexpectedly warm and fuzzy. If you are especially good at finding things, you might be able to track them down scribbling on rock-paper in the brackish marshes of Massachusetts or—if it's storming—holed up in a blanket fort with a pile of good books.
Clay Adamah (they/ze) is the illustrator of Kismet, No!, a board book written by Sara K. Levy, which has been acquired by PJ Publishing.
Clay is a published illustrator working towards representation as an author-illustrator of picture books. Their main interest is using speculative storytelling with folkloric elements to explore themes of subversive joy, diasporic identity, disability ingenuity, and solidarity. They find joy in building up immersive worlds with details that tell many stories readers can uncover as they read a book again and again. They also like to work on an eclectic array of topics from absurd humor to lyrical bedtime stories and enjoy the challenge of adapting their style to new genres. Their illustration is done primarily in Procreate, occasionally incorporating traditional media elements.
Clay's identities include trans-nonbinary, queer, neurodivergent/autistic, Disabled, part-time AAC user, Jewish, and Acadian-American.
